হৃদয় বিদারক এই ছোট গল্পের মূল চরিত্র মিনি ও রহমত শেখ। গল্পে রহমত শেখ একজন ফল বিক্রেতা জিনি আফগানিস্তান থেকে বাংলায় এসেছেন। এবং সেখানে তার ছোট মেয়েকে রেখে এসেছেন। বাংলায় ফল বিক্রি করতে এসে সে মিনিকে দেখতে পায় আর মিনির মাঝে তার ছোট মেয়ের প্রতিছবি দেখতে পায়।
একদিন আফগান থেকে আসা চিঠিতে খবর আসে তার মেয়ে অসুস্থ। টাকার অভাব থাকায় ও ব্যাবসায় বাড়াতে সে ধারে পন্য বিক্রি করতে শুরু করে। গল্পের এক পর্যায়ে তাকে মৃত্যু দণ্ড প্রদান করা হয় তবে উকিলের সহতায় তাকে ১০ বছরের সশ্রম কারাদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়।

কবিগুরু ও বিশ্ব কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ৭ মে ১৮৬১ সালে কলকাতায় জন্মগ্রহন করেন এবং ৭ আগস্ট ১৯৪১ সালে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। মাত্র আট বছর বয়সে তিনি কবিতা লেখেন। তার অসংখ্য সৃষ্টির মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য- শেষের কবিতা, চোখের বালি, নৌকা ডুবি, মালঞ্চ প্রভৃতি উপন্যাস বেশ জনপ্রিয়।
