The main characters of the novel are Emon, Suprova, Suraiia, Firoz, Hasanuzzaman.
In the story, Hasanuzzaman is the husband of Suraiia. At the beginning of the novel, Hasanuzzaman, Suraiya, and their only daughter lived happily together.
A new guest is coming to their house. Wife Suraiya was eagerly waiting for her husband to give this news. But suddenly he left the world while his wife is pregnant.
But Saraiya could not accept that her husband had died. She waits for him and believes that her husband will come back one day. While waiting Suraiya became emotionally and mentally upset. These effects are also felt in her children.
Humayun Ahmed was born on 13 November 1948 and died on 19 July 2012. He is one of the most popular and famous Bengali novelists, short story writers, filmmakers, and also an actor.

হুমায়ূন আহমেদের অন্যান্য উপন্যাসের মতোই অপেক্ষা উপন্যাসটি মধ্যবিত্তও পরিবারের অভাব ও একের প্রতি অন্যের ভালোবাসার প্রতিচ্ছবি ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।
উপন্যাসের মুল চরিত্র হাসানুজ্জামান, সুরাইয়্যা, ইমন ও সুপ্রভা। এই উপন্যাসে সুরাইয়্যার স্বামী হাসানুজ্জামান গর্ভবতী স্ত্রীর পেটে বাচ্চা ও ছোট মেয়েকে রেখে হঠাৎ পৃথিবী থেকে চলে যায়।
এদিকে সুরাইইয়া তার স্বামীর জন্য অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করেন যে তার স্বামী ফিরে আসবে। মূলত ভালোবাসা থেকেই তার মাঝে এই অপেক্ষার শুরু হয়। সময় চলে যায় কিন্তু হাসানুজ্জামান ফিরে আসে না।
এর পরবর্তী আর নানা করুন কিছু কাহিনী ও বাস্তবতার ভিত্তিতে রচিত উপন্যাসটি হুমায়ূন আহমেদের অন্যতম এক সৃষ্টি।
অপেক্ষা উপন্যাসটি ১৯৯৭ সালের ডিসেম্বর মাসে একুশে বই মেলায় প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়। বইটি আফসার ব্রাদার্স পাবলিকেশন থেকে প্রকাশ করা হয়। এই উপন্যাসটিতে মোট 220 টি পৃষ্ঠা রয়েছে।

হুমায়ূন আহমেদ ১৯৪৮ সালের ১৩ই নভেম্বর নেত্রকোনায় জন্মগ্রহন করেন এবং ২০১২ সালের ১৯ জুলাই তারিখে নিউ ইয়র্কের একটি হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসারত অবস্থায় শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করে।
